Is it just me or are the days getting hotter and hotter? This cannot be the same sun I played outside in for hours at a time when I was a little girl. And while I won’t dare complain because I’m absolutely not ready for winter to rear its ugly head back out, these disrespectful temps have got to give! But this weather begs the question, what do you wear when it’s too hot to function?

Getting dressed in the summertime has always felt like some sort of torture. Especially as I trek to and fro the office. The usual long-sleeved blazers and form-fitting trousers just aren’t an option when it’s 90-plus degrees outside. And its still not acceptable to wear bathing suits and denim shorts 24/7 (bummer!). I want pieces that will help me survive the heat, not ones that are more sweat-inducing.

But I recently realized I was stressing myself out for no reason. Summer ensembles really all come down to three things: fabric, fit, and versatility.

  1. Fabric:

Lightweight, flowing fabrics keep you from getting overheated and give your body the ventilation needed to breathe. Think breezy front-button maxi dresses, wide linen or cotton shorts that hit right at the knee, and sleeveless chiffon shirt dresses.

  2. Fit:

You may hear the word heat and think the shorter, the better, right? Wrong! Length is one thing that you shouldn’t be afraid of during summertime. Short, stuffy outfits have a tendency to make you even hotter. Wide-legged trousers and jumpsuits are the perfect choices for giving you coverage while blending in that must-have cool factor. Plus you’re less prone to suffer skin damage from sun exposure.  Win, win.

  3. Versatility:

I love rocking certain items in a unique, re-purposed way. I’m talking bikini tops as crops, swimsuit cover-ups as top layers over shorts, and the list goes on. It’s not only inventive, but a great way to get more use out of your summer wardrobe well into the fall months. Color also plays a huge role. Black absorbs the heat, making you feel like you’re on a never-ending safari trip. So pull the pastel brights, white hues, and even patterns out from the back of your closet and you’re good to go! It’s all about creating fresh looks you’ll actually have fun wearing.
